Fostering Inclusivity: Accommodating Ramadan in the Workplace

As I reflect on the seventh day of Ramadan in Zimbabwe, a predominantly Christian country, I’m struck by the growing awareness among my colleagues and clients about the significance of this holy month for Muslims. Over the years, I’ve witnessed a positive shift in understanding and respect for the fasting practices and religious symbolism associated with Ramadan.

In contrast to the adjustments made in predominantly Muslim countries like the UAE, where work life is often adapted to accommodate Ramadan, here in Zimbabwe, it falls upon us to ensure that our Muslim colleagues and clients feel supported during this time. Here are five simple yet impactful ways to offer your support:

  1. Respectful Meeting Scheduling: Acknowledge the potential challenges of fasting, especially in the mid to late afternoons when energy levels may dip. Whenever feasible, opt for online meetings and inquire about prayer times to ensure meetings are scheduled at convenient times.
Flexible Working Hours: Remember the value of flexibility in working hours. Offering the option to leave an hour before closing time, for example, can go a long way in accommodating the needs of fasting colleagues and clients. This was something I really appreciated at my previous jobs where I was allowed to leave an hour early.

Considerate Event Planning: Avoid organizing long events or unnecessary travel during Ramadan, as these can disrupt the fasting routine. Show consideration for their commitment to fasting by minimizing any disruptions to their daily schedule.

Respectful Eating and Drinking: While it may seem trivial, refraining from eating or drinking in front of fasting individuals, especially during office hours, demonstrates respect for their religious observance. For me , the hardest is missing that morning coffee. Those who know me, know I love my morning fix.

Engage in Meaningful Dialogue: Take the opportunity to learn more about Islam and Ramadan. Engage in open and respectful discussions with your Muslim colleagues or clients, and ask questions to deepen your understanding of their faith and traditions. Consider stepping out of your comfort zone by participating in a day of fasting yourself or joining in on iftar celebrations to show your solidarity and support. No act of kindness is too small.

By implementing these gestures of support, we can foster a workplace culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion, where everyone feels valued and respected. Ramadan Mubarak.
